President ordered Police to pay compensation for killings

news-pic-leadPresident Mahinda Rajapakse Friday ordered IGP Jayantha Wickremaratne to pay Rs.1 million as compensation to the families of the two murdered youth at Angulana.

The President prior to personally meeting the two families of Dhanushka Aponso and Dinesh Tharanga Fernando, who were brutally shot dead allegedly by police attached to Angulana, ordered Wickremaratne to release Rs.1 million  (Rs. 500,000 to each family) from the Police Reward Fund.

He refused to release monies from the President’s Fund, asserting that he was determined not to allow the police to get away with murder.  President Rajapakse in a public speech Thursday said he will not allow any further incidents of indiscipline to continue with the police or armed forces. Three more suspects, two police constables and a civil defence force officer attached to the controversial Angulana police post have been arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department over the alleged murder of the two youth while in police custody.
