The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) has decided to take steps to inspect the standards of all mobile phones being used in the country. “The Commission has received information with regard to sub standard mobile phones being imported to the country,” said Priyantha Kariyapperuma, Director General of TRC, who added that a special team of TRC officials had been deployed to conduct investigations.
The authenticity of these phones could be identified by the International Mobile Equipment Identity or IMEI unique to each mobile phone, according to the TRC, which said that measures were being taken to remove all phones without the IMEI number.
“Any mobile phone user could check this number by dialling *#06# on their mobile phones,” said the TRC.
The TRC observed that phones sans this number are in circulation and are being used for various criminal activities posing a threat to the country’s security. It noted that the rapid proliferation in the use of mobile phones has resulted with the number of users exceeding 12 million.
