Di Mu thank President for making him President !

This was the first SLFP CC meeting to be held after the presidential and parliamentary elections. SLFP secretary Maitripala Sirisena read out the report of the previous meeting and spoke about the resounding mandate the party had received from the people.

The next to speak was D.M.Jayaratne, who said, Mr President I thank you from the bottom of my heart ‘for making me president’ of this country. This is an honour bestowed not just upon me, but the entire Kandyan community. DM continued speaking without realizing the error he had made. As those in the room continued to laugh, DM had stopped his speech and asked “Why are you laughing? Did I say something wrong?”

To this the president had laughingly replied, indicating his chair, “Why don’t you sit over here, you are the president!” DM apologized and the president joked “That’s okay, a lot of people are upset about the ministerial appointments, so a bit of humour is good to clean the system.’’

The next to speak was Athauda Seneviratne who began his speech by addressing the Speaker. “What’s wrong with everybody?” asked the president jokingly, wondering whether it was due to old age or what.

  1. Definitely age is a problem for Sri Lankans. Jyoti Basu never slipped until he was 92 but died at the age of 96. Karunanidhi is still batting without giving chances at the age of 86. Employing Sri Lankan after 65 is dangerous.
