Sri Lanka yesterday saw the birth of a new taxi service comprising Tata-Nano cars, which were introduced recently.

The company which is called Nano Cabs Private Limited was jointly founded by the Deputy Chairman of the Nawaloka Hospitals, Jayantha Dharmadasa and his brother-in-law Anura Gunadasa.

The company currently has 25 Tata Nano cars and expects to increase the number of taxis to 200 before the end of this year. Tata claims Nano  is the world’s cheapest car at around 3,000 US dollars, but in Sri Lanka the basic model costs around 925,000 rupees or 8,400 dollars.

According to a statement by the company, Nano Cabs Pvt Ltd. aims to shift the paradigm of transport in Sri Lanka to a new level, making travel safer, secure and economical, to the general public.

All the 25 cabs that will offer services from tomorrow within in the Colombo city limits are equipped with taxi meters, GPS tracking systems and credit card readers. The fare starts from Rs.50 a kilometre for the first five kilometres and falls thereafter. After 10 kilometres the price falls to a little over Rs.30.

Speaking at the launch of the new taxi service Transport Minister Kumara Welgama said, “the introduction of the new taxi service tackled some of the key issues in the country’s transport sector, providing the public with a high quality product at a time when every rupee counts”.
