Outrage Over Giraffe Killed at Denmark Zoo

Despite protests, rescue offers, and a lump of cash, workers at the Copenhagen Zoo in Denmark killed a healthy giraffe using a bolt gun, then fed chunks of its dissected corpse to the zoo’s lions, all while visitors, including children, looked on Sunday.

Before the giraffe was killed, an online petition to save two-year-old Marius had received more than 27,000 signatures. Young children stood at arm’s length as his carcass was skinned and dissected before the meat was thrown to the lions.

Marius’s plight had triggered worldwide outpourings of protest, including an offer to rehome him in Britain, with many saying they were sickened by a zoo killing a healthy animal.

Copenhagen Zoo had turned down offers from at least two other zoos to take Marius and an offer from a private individual who wanted to buy the giraffe for 500,000 euros ($680,000).
